The Norse Cosmos:
Creation & Destruction

World building

As a Norwegian born New Yorker, creating a surrealist combination of Norse Mythology and US pop culture, I’m using humor to overcome my existential angst.

While navigating multiple cultures working on several media; sculpture, augmented reality, video, and performance, a crossroads of creation and destruction and of body and nature, I’m searching for meaning in an ever fragmented world that seems to be forever relooking itself.

Through humor, low and high culture, by reimagining what goes beyond easy stereotypes, I reclaim my cultural roots from Norway, offering an underlying, subversive message about personal empowerment and the alarming state of our world.

Inspired by Norse Mythology, central to it is the idea of the land, I am reimagining the creation and destruction of the cosmos. Here, Auðumbla, the first cow, whose purpose is to reveal the first gods from the ice, is shaped as my bull-terrier in vibrant colors.

I juxtapose my heritage with my NYC-life, by combining nature and myths with 3D animated and printed sculptures, video performance, archaic stop-animation, and Cyberpunk music.

Embracing the imperfect performer, I incorporate myself into pre-existing fables where men traditionally were the protagonists, transforming the process into one of personal empowerment. Elevating animals to gods, with a Neo-Dada approach, the work is a reminder that land is threatened and that it is no longer endless, pointing out our disconnect with nature, the destruction of our environment and ourselves. My work allows these stories to be reborn, a renaissance of Nordic fables made contemporary.

The Beginning of Cosmos

This video shows a hallucinogenic visual of a tunnel into infinity, which is presenting a modern and re-imagined interpretation of how the beginning of cosmos was described in Norse mythology.

A cow that licks ice that unleashes gods and the world appearing out of absurd elements seems like a fable invented by a group of Vikings high on magic mushrooms and mead.

By using elements from my NYC life surrounded with pop culture and with Electronic Cyberpunk music with hallucinogenic party experiences, I am combining old myths with a new fantasy universe.

All the animated sculptures appearing are made digitally by 3d scan hand-made clay sculptures.

Thor and the Tidewater

This story is based on the Norse Mythology where the God Thor challenges the Giants to a drinking contest. Thor is given a drinking horn and is informed that whoever could finish it in one gulp is considered a winner and a great drinker. Even though Thor drinks mightily, he can’t finish the drink and gives up after a few tries.

Later he learns that the horn from which he drank was enchanted, and connected to the sea. Due to Thor’s unique skills though, he had lowered the sea level dramatically, and thereby created the effect of the tide water we see today.
